Direct English-language Learning Weekly Worksheet Week 1

Week 1

Goal: In this week, I want to improve my English-speaking skill, English-listening skill.
By the time I was working with my exchanged participants from abroad in AIESEC youth organization, so I tried my best to improve my English-communication skill. Working with those foreigners, I can mainly improve my English-communication skill including listening and speaking skill. Eventhough my English-communication skill is under limited, I believe I will improve from time to time.

Completed (include brief description of what you did and the learning process):

Speaking Activity: During my project with three of the exchanged participants from China and Indonesia in AIESEC youth organization. Within this organization, they require volunteers to speak in English as the core language. I can communicate and interact smoothly with them without feeling afraid or guilty. Sometime it’s a bit hard to explain them in typical Khmer words, but I tried my best to explain them by using my English-speaking skill plus my body language skill. Moreover, since they are not native speakers, so sometime it’s hard to get them understand my speaking as well, so what I did at that time was try to speak loudly, slowly and clearly. As a result, they told me that my English-speaking skill is good and understandable.
Listening Activity: As in the same project with those exchanged participants, I used only English in communicating and interacting as a team with them. They all had different style of speaking. For Chinese exchanged participants, they spoke English so slow with Chinese tone and they hardly choose English words in speaking, so it made me so hard to understand. For Indonesian exchanged participant, she spoke English very fast with her native tone which push hardly in “T” sound. For the first time I think it was so hard for me to listen to them sicne they are not native English speaker.

Self-Evaluation:

These are activities that I choosed in order to develop and improve my English-speaking and listening skill this week. I feel that I have learned and improved a lot in communicating and interacting with foreigners as my co-workers. Though we are not native English speaker, we still used English to communicate each other well. The most beneficial thing that I got from these activities was I could learn how to start a conversation with foreigners by showing expression on particular thing. Moverover, I could learn how to respond and interact with them by using proper words. As I have mentioned, it was not easy to me for the first time but it’s also not hard to do it as well, I just need to be brave and confidence in speaking. I found out that the hardest part in English-speaking was finding the right words to talk. When I counldn’t find words talk, I got stucked and stayed silent. Same thing with listening, when I couldn’t find words to respon, I just stayed silent. So in order to overcome these problems, I tried to find words that I saw everyday like in TV channel, radio, or Internet then I tried to explain and interact by my own way, such as using gesture. For the following weeks, I still continue working on this in order to get used to and master in it
